Announcing ‘Future of the Past: Hong Kong 2047+’

HKDHNet to curate the Hong Kong Pavilion at London Design Biennale 2020

We are pleased to announce that HKDHNet are curating the Hong Kong Pavilion at London Design Biennale 2020. Responding to the theme of Resonance, we have proposed ‘Future of the Past: Hong Kong 2047+’. Re-engaging with the archives of and in Hong Kong, the pavilion will speculate how the histories and ideas of Hong Kong resonate in different parts of the world. It will question how history will be accessed, documented, and shared in the future, and complicate the networks of information exchange from the past.

Bringing together three of the most exciting contemporary design studios in Hong Kong, the pavilion will be designed through a collaborative design process, engaging directly with archives, spaces, systems, and historical research material. The Hong Kong pavilion is designed with:

aona is a multinational architectural practice led by RIBA Chartered Architects Charles Lai and Ricky Suen. Working across environments, their practice features an emphasis on material culture in modern architecture within the region of East and Southeast Asia.

K2 is an award-winning digital design lab, including digital branding, web/app design and development, and UI/UX consultancy. Co-founded by Theresa Dermawan and Amy Un, their work combines technology and design with a commitment and sensitivity to holistic and environmental sustainability.

Trilingua is a graphic design studio specialising in Chinese typography applied across diverse mediums. Led by designers Adonian Chan and Chris Tsui Sau Yi, Trilingua strives to redefine and investigate Hong Kong’s design and visual culture without losing sight of a global perspective.

London Design Biennale
Established in 2016 by Sir John Sorrell and Ben Evans, London Design Biennale is a prestigious biannual event and a highlight on the global cultural calendar. The 2018 Biennale welcomed the world’s most exciting and ambitious designers, innovators and cultural bodies to the capital with over 200,000 visitors to Somerset House over the three week period. The third edition of London Design Biennale, 8-27 September 2020, will be curated by Artistic Director Es Devlin. Taking over the entirety of Somerset House, including the Edmond J. Safra Fountain Court and River Terrace, participants will respond to the theme, Resonance.
